Analysis of Neural Data
Woods Hole, Massachusetts

Last updated 28 August 1997

We present here some of the results of the workshop. While these topics should be in place by the end of September, we will continue to update this list and to encourage submissions both by workshop participants and by others in the field.

Spike Sorting

Extracellular electrodes typically record electrical signals from several neurons simultaneously. One would like to discriminate these combined signals through statistical means using amplitude, wave-forms, timing, and, in the case of multiple connected electrodes (as in a tetrode) spatial distributions. Maneesh Sahani presented an outline of some of these methods for the lunch meeting on 8/27. The California Institute of Technology maintains a list of spike-sorting resources and frequently-asked questions.

Neurosciences Preprint Database and Archive

In 1992, Paul Ginsparg at Los Alamos started an electronic preprint server. Originally covering primarily theoretical particle physics, the database has expanded to include other areas of physics, non-linear science, mathematics, and now cellular and systems neural science. Authors can submit papers, algorithms, programs, and data to the archive for wide, rapid, and convenient distribution.
