Graduate Admissions And Application Information
Thank you for your interest in the graduate program at the Department of Physics at the
University of California, San Diego.
Application Information:
Application Deadline for 2010-11 is: December 15, 2009.
Online Graduate Applications for 2010-11 will be available in Mid August, 2009. Please
note that the Department will begin processing of applications on September 1, 2009.

In order to process your application we require the following documents:
1. Official transcripts
2. Statement of Purpose
3. Three letters of reference
4. All results of your Graduate Record Examination (GRE); general and advanced
physics scores
5. Application fee: Domestic $70.00, International $90.00
6. Electronic Graduate Application 2010-11
7. TOEFL Score Report / the IELETS Score Report (International Applicants Only)
The GRE examinations must be taken no later than November in order for the scores to
be considered by the Admissions Committee. Incomplete files and applications received
after December 15th will be considered only if space is available.
Entrance Requirements:
Entering graduate students are required to have a sound knowledge of undergraduate
mechanics, electricity and magnetism, to have had senior courses or their equivalent in
atomic and quantum physics, nuclear physics, and thermodynamics; and to have taken
upper division laboratory work.
Attention International Applicants: 2010-11
International students are required to submit a pre-application form. Admission to the
graduate program is highly competitive so the department will be pre-screening all
international applicants. The pre-application form will allow us to determine if your
application is appropriate for our program.

Foreign students from non-English speaking countries are required to demonstrate
proficiency in English via the TOEFL exam.
The minimum TOEFL score required is 550
for paper-based (PBT), 213 for computer-based (CBT) and 80 for internet based (iBT).
The minimum International English Language Testing System (IELETS) score required
is Band Score 7. The Test for Spoken English (TSE) is highly recommended.
International Students whose native language is not English will be required to
demonstrate English language proficiency before they may serve as teaching assistants.
